Known for his abstract paintings, artist Ross Laurie was born in Walcha, located in the northern tablelands of NSW in 1961. Laurie studied Visual Art at Sydney College of the Arts. Laurie has won the inaugural Norville Prize for Landscape Painting, the COFA Print Award at the Paddington Art Prize and the Kings School Art Prize. He has also been selected as a finalist in the Dobell Drawing Biennial and the Wynne Prize, both at the Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney. Notably, Laurie’s work has been selected for the Salon des Refuses ten times between 1995 and 2019.
Laurie finds inspiration in the spiritual sense at his property. His work relates intimately to the landscape around Walcha. The ever changing environment and dancing light across horizon and hills lines are reflected continually in the endless puzzle of Laurie’s picture frame. The balance between spontaneity and calculated painted marks has been a fascination of Laurie's. His paintings sit somewhere between abstraction and representation, the shimmering marks that crackle with energy and spirit, which can also be seen universally within the environment in which we live.
Ross Laurie’s, is represented by Kings Gallery in Sydney and has work in both regional and National Gallery in Australia.
