Wayne Eager emerged in the Melbourne art scene in the 1980’s when art making was fast becoming a prominent and exciting time for artists in Melbourne. Eager joined a group of artists that went on to establish Roar Studios, one of the first artist run space in a former shoe factory in Fitzroy. The exhibitions and events at Roar Studios were the place to be for many of Melbourne’s younger cultural set.
In 1990 Wayne together with David Larwill embarked on an adventure to Alice Springs and Northern Territory that ended up shaping Eager’s future forever. He spent 4 months painting the Kakadu National Park which culminated into an exhibition at William Mora Galleries. The prolonged visit to Central Australia had a profound impact. So when his wife and fellow artist Marina Strocchi was invited to come and help set up Ikuntji Womens Centre, they stayed for 5 years and then relocated to Alice Springs and lived for 25 years,
Wayne and Marina returned to Victoria in 2022, where he continues to paint. Eager’s work demonstrates explosive pockets of form and gestural marks. His colour and multitiered symbols harmoniously sit on the canvas and allow space and colour to form unique suggestive semblance. Within Wayne’s work you will always find a landscape that speak of the rhythm of the land.
