These works are partially a response to my age and the desire
to review my thinking about the changing events that have occurred
in my lifetime.
Certainly, history is littered with extraordinary and violent events,
but now seems slightly different. A big difference today I feel is not only the
uncertainty of climate change, big money, and the challenges of the digital age,
but the loss of a sense of civility.
These prints are a creative bridge for me between my paintings of the MAD series
and my next exhibition on the theme of “Cowboys and Indians”. Basically, I am
trying to interrogate, whether the complexity the world faces is encouraging rage,
or is it that in society, we like an enemy to fight – black and white solutions.
No easy answers create fear and unease.
At my age I can only fight with a little silliness.
I have retreated to the “Wild West.”
The WOMD lithographs were created in Fiji, working with the renown Lithographer,
Peter Lancaster. Lithography is a difficult art and not so often used today, but really rewarding.
I chose to further complicate it by incorporating foil papers. These were all
hand torn, so no print in the series is exactly the same.
